Based on the novel by John le Carre, this is an engaging spy thriller is packed with a stellar cast and grabs your attention from the beginning of the first scene. After an operation with the soviets goes wrong in Budapest, George Smiley is sent into retirement by the government, yet when information comes to light that there's a mole in the system and the entire nation's security is in danger, Smiley is thrown back into the mix. Smiley bands together those he can trusts and sets out to find out who has betrayed their country. As things develop he finds out that Budapest was no accident, that those he knew well may have betrayed even him and that know one can be trusted. With double agents, false information, shady deals and a system full of lies George Smiley the spy must find out whether it was the tinker, tailor or soldier who commit treason against queen and country.
All the cast in this film were excellently cast each playing their role with the up most believable performances, those who stand out amongst even the best include Gary Oldman playing George Smiley the mild mannered cunning spy with a pin point accuracy as only Goldman can. Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy fill out their perspective roles with great talent, both play against each other as opposites on screen, Benedict playing Peter Guilam a true Brit who hates the idea of spying on his own country, while Hardy takes the role of Ricky Tarr, labeled as defected he wants to clear his name and save the girl he dragged into the game. The rest of the cast is filled with the best of British talent possible, John Hurt as 'Control' at the top of the circus yet betrayed by his apprentices Colin Firth(Bill Haydon), Toby Jones(Percy Alleline) and Ciaran Hinds(Roy Bland). Mark Strong as Jim Prideaux rounds of an amazing cast that fill the roster of this classic spy thriller.
This film is a breath of fresh air, unlike it's cohorts of films in 2011 which rely on explosions, humor or over the top action. Bringing to the table a slice of 1970's British espionage drama, which focus on intelligence, charm and a classic story to win the audience. Though it's not the first adaption, this one will stand out and bring an already well known story to those who may not have had the chance to experience it's cunning genius. I would greatly recommend this film it does almost everything to the point of perfection with it's story, cast and sheer overall brilliance in adaption of style. Bringing a touch of class and elegance that spy films of the modern screen lack this is a must see film and a truly stand out epic of 2011.
