Yes, this film does actually exist and no it's not some sleazy looking rip off of a blockbuster film. Anyway the film starts with Jake Lonergan awakening in the middle of the wild west, with no idea of who he is or what happened to him, all he has left as a clue is a strange metallic bracelet which he can't remove. After a brief fist fight and acquiring a cowboy get up Jake heads into a nearby town to seek out answers. Getting into a ruck with a local businessman's son and stitched up by the local doctor are the only things Jake manages to achieve before being knocked out and handed over to the law by mystery girl, Ella Swenson. The Businessman, Woodrow Dolarhyd heads back to town to free his son whilst something else moves through the skies, while the humans bicker the aliens swoop down and start stealing people off the dusty streets. When Jake appears to be the only one able to fight back with his shiny new bracelet, Woodrow eager to save his son takes volunteers and a disgruntled Jake to face the odds and rescue the townspeople from the clutches of the Extraterrestrials.
Daniel Craig stars as Jake Lonergan, though good against aliens he's no Clint Eastwood and frankly to no fault of Craig's the character is fairly bland with a story mildly interesting yet when it comes down to it ends up disappointing. Harrison Ford plays Woodrow Dolarhyd a man who at first and for a large part of the film is only interested in wealth and power and as the story goes the audience should feel the emotional journey of the old war hero... yet this feels exactly as it looks Harrison Ford Cameo-ing as a cowboy, which is alright but the charisma and charm feels played down to play such another dull and wooden character. The stunningly beautiful Olivia Wilde is a saving grace to the film until her back story is revealed really and then her character seems out of place even amongst the nature of the film it feels out of place. Sam Rockwell as the Doc stands out against the other mainly bland characters and his change over the course of the film is actually more entertaining than the prominent ones the film focuses on. Two other side characters, Clancy Brown (brilliant in most things) as the religious man with a fighting spirit is another fun character and a mention to Keith Carradine as Sheriff John Taggert as he's has a fantastic mustache in this film.
It's summer. It's a blockbuster. Ergo it has to have appeal, how about Cowboys fighting Aliens? While the crew has tried to throw a story together and create a sense of some atmosphere that just isn't there, It's general premise taken from a comic and crudely adapted with a high flying cast, Is it as brilliant as the other Films to hit our screens over the past few months? Not really. In essence this film tries to be everything except what it generally should be based on it's title, the concept of a bunch of rag tag group of wild-westerners facing off against some broody invader with explosions left right and center, guns fueled by foul language and the most dangerous gun-toters the world has seen. Instead, you get a thrown together ramble of villagers on a journey with change of heart and trying to find out who they really our(basically self discovery) which really is way of the mark in terms of the blockbuster it sounds like, so if you really our warn out don't care what you watch and just wanna see Olivia Wilde vaguely fight aliens, see this just don't expect to see any true greatness for your fist full of dollars.
