The Avengers

If the Avengers could make a statement on what it has done to the genre of superhero-films it would most likely  quote Peter Venkmen 'We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!'. After five films building up to it, the Avengers assemble to defeat the pesky God of mischief, Loki who with the cosmic cube(Tesseract) plans to invade planet Earth and proclaim himself king with the help of his lovable friends the alien race of Chitauri. Though that doesn't sit right with some people, one person being Nick Fury who decides it's time to reboot the Avengers initiative and calls together his super group to try and put a stop to the madness Loki brings forth. However, with a group of unique individuals like these guys they have a few creases to iron out, anger issues to resolve and come to terms with how society has changed in 70 years. Can this bunch of super powered and godly individuals put their differences aside for the sake of the planet? Can they assemble in time to bring about an end to Loki's mischievous plot? One things for sure is Hulk is gonna sure as hell smash this time round.

Robert Downey Jr is back as Iron-Man to repulsor blast his egotastical way into our hearts with his warm and fuzzy goatee (and budding bromance with the Hulk) bringing with him the same charisma that makes people swoon over the Invincible Tony Stark, just like the previous outings. Chris Evans is thrust forwards without the aid of a DeLorean from The First Avenger with suprising sprite for an ageing gentleman (I jest) pitch perfect is Evans' performance as Steve Rogers the man out of time thrust into a bizarre new world and still determined to stand for the every man as Captain America. Mark Ruffalo had the boots to fill after his Hulk had to be based solely on his new role, but by golly the Incredible mass has never looked or been treated this well on the screen before, while Ruffalo makes an impressive body double for the Hulk his portrayal of a broken and self depreciating Bruce Banner makes you care a great deal about both the man of science and the beast of mayhem. Then we have the Asgardians good and bad, Chris Hemsworth is back in his flowing red cape to hammer down the hatches on the Hellicarrier and impress everyone with his ginormous muscles, booming voice and charm to the table as the out-of-the-human-loop God of Thunder. While Tom Hiddleston also reappears after as Loki and he's stepped up his game, while in Thor Hiddleston gave a dark yet mildly fragile god of mischief in Avengers he's stepped up his game with a stride, out is the fragile in with the diabolical madness and insanity that is the new and even more dangerous Loki. The human members of the team are in fact equally part of the wider picture with both Jeremy Renner(Hawkeye) and Scarlett Johansson finding their own spotlights within the super team and standing shoulder to shoulder in their amazing performances. Though not the stars these stand out characters still give one hell of a performance and a hell of a lot of emotion for humanity Clark Gregg(Phil Coulson), Cobie Smoulders(Maria Hill) Gwyenth Paltrow(Pepper Potts) and Stellan Skarsgard(Erik Selvig). Last by no means least the man who assembled the heroes and takes control of the situation with ease and awesome in equal amounts Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury!

With so many big names overflowing from the roster you'd be hard pressed to think that it wouldn't work, they'd all be fighting for center stage and the film would fall into a chaotic mess. Together they break center stage, they destroy it. This group of all phenomenally well acted characters mixed with Joss Whedon's witty writing style, a comic book adaption first and enough special effects to make a grown man weep with joy. The Avengers assemble to roaring applaud from world audiences because it seemed so unlikely that it would ever work, while some of the past five films have been fun and entertaining they weren't exactly spectacular and never could reach the same esteem as the first build up to the Avengers 'Iron-Man' but It's more than fair to say even that film doesn't stand up to the Avengers, such a beautifully and well done mash up of charm, wit and quality. At first people complained that it wouldn't stand up to the comics and it would mess too much with the back-story but up steps Joss Whedon once again and  punches gleeful Marvel fans in the face with Hulk fists of pure entertainment until they shut up throw money at him and hail to his work of pure unadulterated worship of Marvel comics and the super team that saved the summer of any need for further super hero blockbusters(The Dark Knight has to rise to a challenge now) The Avengers. This film is a must see throwing in something for any and every film goer. The Avengers is a must see for all film fans.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

The Year is 2019. The Avengers have won. DC is almost nowhere to be seen and the Dark Universal Monsters Universe has hopefully been lost somewhere in the black sea. Wait... What is that? Is that a monster movie?? Is that Japans great lizard/Americanised cousin? Yes. Yes it is and he's here to show the world what he's made of! While first reading this you'll most likely be saying 'Wait. stop. Isn't that the Godzilla movie which critics are panning and hasn't scraped the box office??? Well on a technical level you'd be right, but sit right there and let me riff a little here; Godzilla: King of the monsters takes a giant radioactive step from the world of 2014's first outing for the new Godzilla and actually shows more than 8 minutes (No really go back and see just how much he's in the film...) of the big green not referring to Mark Ruffalo but japan's own green wrecking machine. Godzilla is king. Especially in terms of monster brawls and I can

Oblivion

Cruise is back doing what comes naturally. No, not impossible missions, this time round Cruise is back on Sci-fi but instead of running from crimes he already commit in the future(How long has it been now since minority report?) he finds himself the maintenance man of a post-apocalyptic earth in 2077. Jack Harper is technician #49 of a group specifically tasked with keeping Earth's remaining defences up and running, alongside partner Victoria he awaits the coming full transportation to the new human colony on Titan. Being one of the last to leave Earth, both are anxious about the final few days of maintenance before they can finally leave the blue planet behind them, though for different reasons. While Victoria is increasingly eager to start a new life, something digs at Jack who still relates some connection to the planet no matter how void of life. It's only after a crashed pod brings an echo of human life back to earth that Jack and Victoria are torn in their views, as Jack

DUNKIRK

Christopher Nolan is back. Cinematography's dark knight feels well at home with the gritty and grim setting that is the beaches of Dunkirk. Historically tuned to tell us the story of an army in despair abandoning the continent already aflame to war as the German army pushes both the English and the french towards the sea. This film isn't about one central character but the character of the soldier who still fights when winning is no longer an option but survival is very much the morale and more crucial victory. From the films opening moments of unsettling silence on a french street to the windswept harsh cold of a dull beached out collection of sullen faced men the tone is deafening of defeat, and yet a film so full of despair it's clear the message of the film is very much hope. From the valiant efforts of a three man RAF patrol running low on fuel who'll do whatever it takes to stand where they still can, a group of civilian requisitioned boats sent to the jaws of wa
