This isn't essential your average horror film, as it actually has a fairly decent and almost believable storyline as far as horror films go. While the upstarting Lambert family of five move into a new suburban everything isn't as blissful and happy as it should be(underlying marital problems, again.....) and as with every american film set in a suburban house things soon begin to go amiss, when one of the children, Dalton goes exploring into the attic and seems to get the attention of some unfriendly other worldly demons. After taking a clumsy fool of on old and broken ladder, Dalton is sent into a mysterious coma leaving his parents Josh and Renai to try and get back on with life while trying to cope with their son's unknown illness. Josh and Renai however soon find out there is more to the coma than meets the eye and soon strange and freighting things begin to happen in the new house...
This film doesn't have as many big stars as some of the other films its competing against but the ones it got did the job well Josh Lambert(Patrick Wilson) plays a newbie father and family man who seems at times to struggle with his marriage which is somehow supposed to explain what is revealed to the end and his wife Renai(Rose Byran) is struggling in her own way, in producing music which i presume was to add a sense of realism to the family yet seemed like a wasted point. Both play the roles of parents determined to help their son, while Josh is supposedly meant to grow into a better father figure which Patrick Wilson does show fairly well, I have to admit i found Rose Byran a tad bit annoying but as a mother in desperation i assume thats what they were going for so bravo! With the rest of the cast, I did not understand the point of the two paranormal investigators who seemed to act as a comic relief which took away from the serious feel it had until they appeared While the character of Elise Rainier(Lin Shane) acted well as the classic exorcist figure who knows more than it looks like she would.
There isn't really anything wrong with Insidious, it's just there isn't a lot right. It feels like someone watched Paranormal activity and thought 'what would happen if we made it more emotional, realistic and add a storyline?' and thats what Insidious is, an attempt to make something at of nothing. While i assumed it was going to be at least scary i found out there really wasn't much in terms of horror and apart from the supernatural aspect of the story it would probably be defined as a drama about a struggling family trying to cope through a traumatic experience. It may not be great but i like the way they attempted to mix the idea of drama/horror and the main roles were executed well, though other than that i can't think of a justifying argument of a reason to see it, unless you really and i mean really like dramas with paranormal aspects.
